10 Movie Plot Twists You Never Saw Coming

Everyone must love a plot twist when they see one. For what better way to end a great movie but with a killer finish. Some twists can leave you either in shock, disappointment or sheer pleasure but love them we must for that’s what made the movie so memorable. The movie plot twists we’re about to reveal contain spoiler alerts so be warned!


1. THE OTHERS (2001)

This horror film leads us on a chilling ride when Grace (Nicole Kidman) moves in to a new house with her two daughters. When one of her daughters starts seeing and hearing things, more strange and eerie occurrences happen and they start to believe the house is haunted by “the others”. After all, seeing means believing right? The ending is crafted to perfection giving us a great twist we never saw coming.

The twist: It is Grace and her children who are haunting the house because they’re actually dead.

2. THE SIXTH SENSE (1999)

Who can forget the famous line “I see dead people” in this movie by M.Night Shayamalan whose trademark was giving audiences surprising twists in his endings. In this one we see Bruce Willis (Dr Malcolm Crowe) who plays a child psychologist trying to help a young boy (Haley Joel Osment) who is disturbed by ghosts with unfinished business on earth.

The twist: Just like in The Others, the main character is also dead and he never realized it! (and neither did we).

3. THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (1980)

Star Wars fans would already know the twist by now in this epic movie, which is also known as Episode V of the Star Wars series. Need I say more?

The twist: “No, I am your father…. “

4. GONE GIRL (2014)

This disturbing mystery movie based on a novel by Gillian Flynn revolves around a husband and wife played by Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. After the wife goes missing on their fifth wedding anniversary and blood is found in the house, her husband becomes the prime suspect.

The twist: After efforts to find her we eventually discover that she had framed him all along and when she finally reappears we are in for some more surprises.

5. ATONEMENT (2007)

This epic drama based on a novel is set during World War II where jealousy and a false accusation sets off a chain of damaging circumstances for the lives of lovers Cecelia and Robbie played by Keira Knightley and James McAvoy. Cecilia’s younger teen sister, Briony, an aspiring writer who is too young to understand the throes of adulthood is the culprit behind it all and eventually confesses to the mistakes she made decades later.

The twist: After being led to believe that all ends well we discover that Briony only imagined a happy ending in a novel she writes when she’s older all so that she could atone for her guilt.

6. PLANET OF THE APES (2001)

Would you believe it if a planet full of apes existed? Well this remake of the 1968 classic science fiction movie leads us to believe so when a group of astronauts crash land on this planet.

The twist: They were on planet earth all along and apes are ruling it!

7. SHUTTER ISLAND (2010)

This gripping psychological thriller is an adaptation from a book by Dennis Lehane and directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese. When a patient from a mental hospital goes missing U.S Marshall Teddy Daniels (Leonardo Di Caprio) starts investigating the disappearance and it is here where the thrilling adventure begins.

The twist: Everything taking place at the hospital is all a plot to treat the actual mental patient who is none other than the marshall himself.

8. THE USUAL SUSPECTS (1995)

A clever tale of mystery that features a line-up of well-known actors among them Gabriel Byrne, Benicio del Toro and Kevin Spacey. Those who’ve watched this will never forget the infamous and mysterious Keyser Soze who weaves his way in and out of existence and fools us all.

The twist: When we all discover who Keyser Soze is and aren’t we in for a surprise!

9. PYSCHO (1960)

So this movie may be a little outdated what with it’s 60’s fashion and hairstyle. But no horror fan should miss this Alfred Hitchcock classic movie named as one of the best movies of all time. The title is self-explanatory and the story revolves around the life of Norman Bates who runs a small motel while taking care of his ailing mother who occupies one of the rooms there.

The twist: His mother has been long dead (So who’s the woman in the room?).

10. SEVEN (1995)

Seven deadly sins, the hunt for a serial killer and Brad Pitt are reasons for you to watch this rather gruesome and disturbing movie. Plus the twist at the end of the movie is too good to spoil for those who haven’t seen it so we’ll only reveal a snippet of the twist.

The twist: Envy and wrath!
