When we talk about florals in fashion, it is usually associated with springtime. They signify the change in seasons and they have been an undeniable favourite of fashionistas for a range of occasions — from weddings, parties to the office.
But that doesn’t mean that they have to be boring, predictable and can only be worn during spring. Nope, why should this go-to print be restricted by seasons? This year for Fall/Winter 2015, it wasn’t difficult to notice the flowers blooming on the runways of Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino and many more noted brands.
You don’t have to shove florals into the corner during autumn and winter, you can definitely bring some delicate prettiness into those cold months! So here are 3 ways you can flaunt those florals:
1. Move To The Dark Side
When it comes to fashion trends, flowers never really seem to die. They continue to bloom and flourish on apparels and accessories during fall and winter, albeit showing up with more subdued colour palettes. This season, florals get moody and take on darker tones and subdued colours — all while maintaining their gorgeous delicateness.
When rendered against regal red, deep teal, royal blue, even just simply black backgrounds, they stand out especially boldly. And while it is usually better to just avoid choosing pastels for this season, you can still work them into your outfit, but try to do it in small doses!
2. Choose ‘Heavier’ Fabrics
Florals take on a little more attitude and verve during these colder months, so why not you do the same? Pair your dark florals with some edgy leather pieces (in the forms of knee-high or thigh-high boots or biker jackets). And to keep them from veering too much into spring-ish territory, opt to wear them with more traditional cold-weather fabrics such as wool and suede. All these work well in defusing some of that stereotypical saccharine sweetness of flower prints.
3. Go 3D!
Have some 3D fun and bring some flora and fauna to life. There is a process called appliqué, which uses additional fabric sewn onto a design to create a decorative 3D effect that is literally outstanding. So take your love for that flora and fauna style to a new level, go from floral prints to appliqués. Flowers don’t have to grow from within the confines of a garden fence anymore!
Because the designs aren’t flat, much more accessory choices can be made from it — brooches, hair clips or slides, corsages and especially earrings. The tactile nature of such designs allows for interesting mixes and contrasts of textures in the fabrics used, producing modern pieces of art, if you will.
