This year, we have witnessed many colours, styles, textures and designs take turns to dominate the streets and runways. In the ever-changing, ever-competitive fashion scene, we are always imagining and predicting trends that will surface and take the world by storm in the upcoming season. And with every end of the year, we cannot just look back and reflect on which viral songs and videos provided the most entertainment, or which fashion trends we liked the best, we have to look forward to what the upcoming year will bring to us.
From the runway shows of various brands’ Spring/Summer 2016 collections, here’s a look at some trends that you may want to take note of when prepping your wardrobe for 2016!
1. All about those sleeves
Different kinds of sleeves stole the limelight at various runways in London, Milan, Paris and New York. So if you’re going to be looking out for one thing for spring and summer, watch out for those sleeves. Roksanda and fashion’s boy wonder JW Anderson sent puffy sleeves inspired by the 80s down their shows, while Erdem delivered Victorian era inspired virago sleeves.
Asymmetric sleeves were also spotted at Jonathan Saunders and Joseph. So go ahead and wear your heart on your sleeves and forget the rest of your outfit. (Just kidding, of course.)
2. Silky smooth
This flowy fabric follows body movements and gives off a slight ethereal feel, especially when worn as a dress, and even works well with pants!
Givenchy gave it a little more structure with a blazer jacket design, while Jill Stuart incorporated a lot of silk into her Spring/Summer collection and kept to the theme by ending the show with a silk top in black.
3. Sheer delight
For the past few seasons, sheer materials have dominated the runways and the trend doesn’t seem to be slowing down for 2016 at all. From Gucci to Anteprima, designers were still crazy about sheer. When wearing this trend, it’s best to leave some things to the imagination and not reveal too much — with some strategically placed panels or some light layering.
4. Orange is the new black
Spring and summer are all about bright colours, and this year, it seems like orange will be taking centerstage. Perfect for people to sit up and take notice of what you are wearing! The runways saw Moschino playing with neon orange in most of its pieces, Christopher Kane also featured lots of orange in his colourful collection.

2015 was all about 70s fashion, but 2016 could just be the year when 80s fashion makes a comeback. Designers have already dipped their feet into the 80s for Fall/Winter 2015/2016 and experimented with retro looks. As you can already tell, acid brights, interesting sleeves and silk materials have already made their appearance on the Spring/Summer 2016 runways.
But seriously, the trends coming up in the New Year will be partly determined by YOU, so go ahead and let us know YOUR predictions of which trends will reign supreme. Go on and make fashion history!
