Running out of real estate for your latest fashion haul? Here’s how to create some space and transform your closet from drab to fab.
Learn to Let Go
Sure, those torn-up skinny jeans were all the rage years ago, but the fashion world has moved on and so should you. “Fashion’s a cycle,” you may say. True enough, but this cycle takes years to come full circle. Instead of waiting, do yourself a favour and be honest about which items won’t see the light of day. Once you’ve narrowed that down, it’s time to sell or donate them to charity. Remember, old isn’t always gold.
Focus on Quality, Not Quantity
Having the most clothes doesn’t mean having the best clothes. You can be almost certain that a premium shirt will have superior fit, feel and finish compared to an equivalent that costs ten times less. Be discerning when you shop and you’ll start to own clothes you’ll be proud to wear.
Don’t Overlook the Essentials
Sure, the statement pieces are what give your outfit the bells and whistles, but they may not be the most practical choice of clothes for non-occasion days, and they will eventually go out of style. Maintain a healthy ratio (70:30 or 80:20) of everyday basics, which are not only fail-safe, but versatile and will see much more use compared to your highlight pieces.
Keep it Neat
No amount of tidying will make a wardrobe look proper if clothing’s strewn all over the place. For starters, kick the habit of dumping your laundered apparel into whatever nook and cranny is available. Then, learn the proper technique of folding clothes and invest in quality hangers. With enough practice and dedication, your messy wardrobe will become well-organised and a sight to behold.
Sort by Colour
The last thing you want is to open your wardrobe and be greeted by a kaleidoscope of colours. This does no favours for aesthetics, but more importantly, leads to inefficiency when picking outfits. Colour coordinate your clothing and you’ll come to one of two conclusions: You have more than enough of a particular colour and you can venture into new shades, or you feel comfortable with your preferred colours and won’t waste time experimenting with new ones. Either way, you win.
