With dozens of new drops every month, the sneaker scene can get a little overwhelming to keep up with. Luckily, there are some classics that will never go out of style, and that you can wear with almost anything. Here are six iconic sneakers you should have in your closet:
1. Nike Air Force 1
When it made its debut in the early ’80s, the Air Force was a basketball shoe, and the first designed with Nike’s famous Air technology. Since then, it’s become a street style staple, with hundreds of different colors in low, mid, and high styles (including collabs with other brands and celebrities). That said, we’re still fond of the classic all-white.
2. Adidas Stan Smith
Another lifestyle sneaker that got it start in sports, the adidas Stan Smith is named after a former no. 1 tennis star. The original Stan Smith may not be as well known today, but his clean leather sneakers live on, and is arguably Adidas’ most recognizable sneaker despite not having the iconic three stripes. You can’t go wrong with the classic green, but like the Air Force, you have your pick of styles to choose from.
3. Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66
Created in 1966 for athletes in the 1968 Mexico Olympics, the Japanese-designed sneaker debuted as a running shoe called the LIMBER UP KAWA BK, featuring the now-iconic red and blue ASICS stripes on white leather. Since then, the line is known as the Mexico 66, with even more colorways available.
4. Converse Chuck Taylor
You might be noticing a theme — a lot of these classic sneakers got their start in sports and successfully evolved into street style. Chuck Taylors, named after the American basketball player, have become almost synonymous with the Converse brand. It’s been a bestseller since its debut in the 1920s, and shows no sign of stopping.
5. Vans Old Skool
With its deep roots in Southern California skate culture, this sneaker has some serious counterculture vibes. The canvas and suede shoe, which was the first to feature the iconic Vans sidestripe, has a timeless silhouette that will look good with anything.
6. Puma Suede Classic
The Puma Suedes, which celebrate their 50th anniversary this year, are the perfect mix of comfort and style, with the suede material lending some luxe feel to the simple design. The shoe also boasts some hip-hop heritage as a B-boy favorite in the ‘80s.
