We all know that making a good first impression is important, and that means we should always try to dress our best. But in addition to being able to dress well, putting on even a little bit of makeup does wonders to brighten up your overall look.
Makeup can be one of the most confusing things, especially if you are just starting out on your makeup collection. So whether you are a beginner dabbling in makeup, or someone who’s been experimenting with cosmetics for years, it is still important to know what are the basic makeup essentials to have in your makeup bag.
1. Foundation
Starting with a good base for your face makeup is crucial in showing off a flawless complexion by evening out your skin tone, erasing blemishes and the occasional pimple. Foundations come in powder, liquid, gel and cream forms and vary from sheer to heavy coverage, but remember: less is more. You don’t have to slap a thick layer all over your face, just on certain parts that need extra coverage. And always start with a small amount so you have some leeway to build up on coverage.
2. Powder
A must-have in every makeup bag. Not only does it help to seal in your foundation and make it last longer, but also prevents you from looking like an oily frying pan. You can also skip foundation and just use powder on it’s own for sheer coverage.
3. Blush
Adding some colour to your face with some blush can really brighten your appearance. But don’t go overboard on the application or you’ll risk looking like a clown.
4. Lipstick
It doesn’t take much expertise to apply lipstick, gloss or a tint, so beginners can have a field day with different colours and products. Picking a colour close to your natural lip colour is a good start, after that, owning a classic red lipstick is an easy makeup must-have for changing up your look and make a beauty statement.
5. Eyeshadow
Whether you choose to get eyeshadow palettes or individual colours, its best to start with more natural colours such as brown, beige, tan, taupe, off-white and gold. Even using just one colour to define your eyes will help wake them up.
6. Eyeliner
Define your eyes and bump up your makeup with some eyeliner in black or dark brown. They come in pencil, gel and liquid forms, but beginners do much better with pencil types that go on smoothly.
7. Mascara
Make your eyes pop with some mascara, they make your eyelashes fuller and longer. Even without wearing any eyeliner or eyeshadow, your eyes will look more defined. Get them in waterproof if you’re worried about smudges, but be warned that they can be difficult to remove.
8. Brow pencil
Neatly groomed eyebrows are the perfect frame for your features, so fill in any sparse parts and keep them defined with brow pencils, powders or gels. They are also perfect for anchoring a dramatic eye makeup look, so never leave them undrawn.
