One thing the beauty world is obsessed with right now is skincare. Every individual has a personal journey when it comes to skincare since what might work for one might have different results for another. Your skin is the largest organ on your body and taking care of it is more than just looking good — it’s keeping it healthy.

With the popularity of skincare and its products, it can seem overwhelming. That being said, if you’re trying to fix a skin issue, consider these common mistakes because you might be doing more harm than good.

1. Over-exfoliating

One of the best feelings in the world is touching your skin after it’s been recently exfoliated. Softer, smoother, and brighter? What’s not to love? Exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells and buildup. Just make sure that you’re not doing it too often since overexfoliating ruins our moisture barrier, and damages our skin cells and doesn’t allow them a chance to grow into healthy ones. Too much can even cause breakouts! Exfoliating once or twice a week should be enough.

2. Skipping the SPF

A common misconception is only wearing sunblock when it’s sunny outside. The truth is — one needs to wear an SPF of at least 30 everyday. Rain or shine, UV rays are always present and they slowly break down bonds in your skin that leaves you with wrinkles and dark spots. Skipping the SPF leads to premature ageing and you surely don’t want that!

3. Being hands-on

You may be touching your face unconsciously throughout the day and it’s time to stop this habit. Your hands are full of bacteria and oils — even just resting your head on your hands can lead to breakouts. Train yourself to avoid this or always wash your hands before touching your face. While you’re at it, stop the habit of picking on blemishes since this tends to leave marks and lengthens healing time as well.

4. Sleeping with makeup

The mistake many girls are guilty of doing. We know the feeling of just wanting to crawl into bed after a long and tiring day, but the damage with sleeping in your makeup should make you think twice next time.

5. Washing with a bar soap

Don’t want to spend on that pricey cleanser? Don’t substitute it with a bar soap! Bar soaps strip your skin of all its water, which then leads to a buildup of dead skin cells. Not only does it reverse the benefits of the exfoliative you just used, but it also renders your moisturizer as useless since all it’s doing is fixing the damage you just committed. Might as well invest a little more on a hydrating cleanser to ensure you don’t throw off your pH balance!

6. Wrong order of application

With so many new and exciting skincare products being introduced in the market, it’s tempting to stock up on serums, moisturizers, and masks. When faced with a big stash, it can be confusing on where to start. A general rule to follow is to layer products from lightest to heaviest consistency. An example is cleanser, serum, moisturizer, and lastly, face oils — strictly in that order. This will ensure that denser products do not block the absorption of the lighter products. Applying them in the wrong order can render some of the products less effective to useless.

This especially holds true if you’re using products with actives like AHA, BHA, and retinol, which need your skin to be at specific pH levels to work their magic.

7. Too much products

You should always remember that less is more. Skincare is fun but you might be guilty of using way too much of one product or many products in general. An example would be using too much moisturizer: you only need a coin-sized amount of product to get the job done.

Also take note that it takes around 6 to 8 weeks to see a difference — so frequent product changes will show no progress.

8. You are what you eat

People tend to forget that skin is a living and breathing organ — this means that not only do you need the correct external care, but internal care from nutrition as well. What you eat has a direct impact on how your skin looks and feels. Eating a healthy and balanced diet will give you the glow which can only be obtained from happy and healthy cells. It’s no wonder superfoods are now finding its way into skincare products.

9. Not listening to your skin

Everyone is unique, and this means that our skin requires different things. When you just listen and try out recommendations from friends and family, you do what’s best for their skin and not yours. You should keep in mind the skin type you have to ensure that the products you use are beneficial to your skin. And when in doubt, it’s always best to consult with a dermatologist.
