We all know that feeling of looking in the mirror and bemoaning those dark circles under our eyes. It’s easy to just chalk it up to lack of sleep and pile on the concealer, but actually, odds are fatigue isn’t the main culprit (although it certainly doesn’t help).

Keep on scrolling for our guide on those pesky eyebags and dark undereye circles and how to get rid of them!

What causes dark circles and bags under the eyes?

Eyebags and puffiness are caused by fluid pooling in your undereye area. This area already has thinner skin than the rest of your face, making it more obvious.

If you have permanent panda eyes, you can probably blame genetics. You could have inherited thin skin from your parents, or have a herediary tendency to hyperpigmentation, especially if you have darker skintones.

The aging process also makes the skin thinner and less elastic because of slower collagen regeneration. This causes your skin to sag and blood veins and vessels to become more visible.

And while you can’t control your genes or your age, you can control how much rest and hydration you get. Sleep deprivation, eye strain, and dehydration can make your skin look dull and the area around your eyes look puffy and swollen.

How do you get rid of them?

Here’s your night-to-morning routine:

1. Gently but thoroughly remove your makeup.

Those dark circles might look even more prominent because of leftover eyeliner. A proper cleanse give your skin some room to breathe, but intense rubbing can cause even worse swelling and even damage.

Invest in an effective makeup cleanser that can handle even waterproof makeup, or adopt the double cleansing method.

2. Add an eye cream with retinoid to your routine.

You hopefully already have an eye cream in your skincare arsenal, but to boost the effects, opt for a product with a retinoid.

In a nutshell, this Vitamin A derivative increases skin cell renewal and boosts collagen production for young, fresh-looking skin. This firms up and brightens your undereye area, plus helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

3. Add an extra pillow.

While you’re asleep, your blood circulation slows down, making it easier for fluid to pool under your eyes. Pile up the pillows and sleep on your back to raise your head to reduce the fluid build-up.

4. Use a brightening product.

If your dark circles are caused by dark hyperpigmentation, invest in skincare products with lightening or brightening ingredients like vitamin C, kojic acid, and daisy extract.

5. Don’t skimp on the sunscreen.

Overexposure to the sun can thin the delicate area under your eyes and boost melanin production, which can worsen dark circles. Make sure you’re using a face sunscreen that gives you full protection while still being gentle on your skin.

6. Apply concealer strategically.

Even with the proper skincare, you might still need a quick fix with concealer. The key is to look for a creamy concealer with peachy undertones — this will give you solid, long-lasting coverage and neutralize the bluish hue of your dark circles. Avoid yellow-toned concealer as it’ll only draw attention to the area!

To apply, gently pat on in a light layer, then blend down and outwards. Finish off with translucent powder to set, and you’ll look bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.
