We’ve all been there: after some overtime at the office, an all-nighter cramming for exams, or even just an accidental bingewatch session, we wake up the next day looking just as exhausted as we feel. Personally, that’s the start of a cycle — when I know that I don’t look my best, I feel even worse, especially if I have a full day ahead. And conversely, if I make an effort to look presentable, it’s an instant pick-me-up.
Luckily, with the plethora of beauty products out there, there are a lot of ways to hack looking bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Read on for our best tips and tricks on how to look more awake!
Reduce puffiness by cooling down the eye area.
Not exactly a makeup tip, but trust us, this quick hack will work wonders on sleep-deprived eyes — the cold will help reduce swelling. The quickest way is to chill two metal spoons in the refrigerator/freezer, and press the curved sides of the spoons over your eyelids for a minute or two.
Look for brightening formulas in your face makeup.
Invest in primers and foundations specifically designed with brightening features, like light-reflecting particles and hydrating power to revive dull skin. Ingredients like green tea and aloe will also give an extra boost. If you don’t want to buy a brand new foundation, you can also try mixing your fave liquid highlighter with your current foundation for a subtle glow, or use a dewy makeup mist.
Color correct eyebags with different-toned concealers.
Remember learning about the color wheel in your grade school art classes? Use complementary colors (opposite each other on the wheel) to your advantage to make the most out of your concealer.
- For the dark undereye circles (which are usually purplish): go for yellowish tones for tan skin, and peachier tones for fair skin. Apply in an inverted triangle shape for a natural look and face-lifting effect.
- For redness: use a green-toned concealer.
- For sallowness/dullness (yellow-toned spots): use lavenders and light purples.
Sweep on some blush.
A light flush on your cheeks can make you look super fresh, regardless of how much sleep — or lack thereof — you’ve had the night before. Turn to blushes with rosy and peachy hues (with maybe a touch of gold) for a natural-looking glow.
Use nude eyeliner.
You’ve probably heard the trick about using white eyeliner to make your eyes look bigger, but the color can be pretty obvious. Instead, go for a liner in a nude color like taupe or beige for a more subtle look. Line your waterline, the inside corner of your eyes, and even right under your brow bones — you’ll instantly look more alert.
Curl your lashes.
Longer and fuller lashes will also make your eyes look bigger. For best effect, squeeze an eyelash curler at the root of your lashline, in the middle of your lashes, and at the tips. Finish off with your fave volume-adding mascara.
