It’s hard to stay motivated and disciplined in sticking to your fitness regime when you’re on vacation. After all, you might think, you’re on holiday — surely you deserve some down time!
Certainly, you do. You earned that break. But straying too far from your workout routine means you’ll find it even harder to jump back into it after you return from your break. Plus, maintaining your fitness levels will also help you enjoy your vacation more.
If you find it hard to stay on track when you’re travelling, no sweat! You don’t necessarily need access to a gym to keep fit. Here are some tips to help you stay in shape while travelling:
Walk Everywhere
Or at least, as much as you can. Skip the (likely) overpriced taxis or crowded metro, and explore your destination on foot instead. You’ll get in a workout from all that power-walking while sight-seeing — two birds, one stone! Invest in a good pair of walking shoes, and bring a step-counter if you’re really serious about your daily step count or download a fitness app to monitor your progress (optional).
Add a Variety of Activities to Your Itinerary
When planning your itinerary, try to include a range of activities that will get you up and moving — be it snorkelling, cycling, paddle-boarding, ice-skating, skiing, or more, depending on the weather. There are always ways to get moving if you set your mind to it!
Bring Your Own Weights
Pressed for time or unable to hit the gym? Try bringing your gym with you! Victoria’s Secret model Karlie Kloss brings her own weights and resistance bands to squeeze in a quick 20-minute workout in her hotel room. To get your regular cardio fix, you can also do Jumping Jacks or jog on the spot, or pack a pair of jump ropes into your luggage.
Jet-Lagged? Go For a Morning Run
We know, the last thing you want to do when you’re jet-lagged is . You are more inclined to crash into bed. But not only is that a waste of your holiday, you’re also not helping your body adjust to the new time-zone. Going for a run or swim helps refreshes your mind and body, and recalibrates your body clock.
Bring Your Own Snacks
This one doesn’t require you to break a sweat. Instead of reaching for unhealthy junk food at the airport or indulging in deep-fried street food, pack healthier snacks like fruits and nuts so that your waistline doesn’t suffer while you’re sightseeing.
