Florals

Florals. They are present in every Spring/Summer collection in some way or another, but this season, they have also showed up on the Fall runways. Led by Givenchy, Dolce & Gabbana and Erdem, the flowers of the moment are set on a black canvas for a dark, mysterious allure. While we don’t enjoy distinguished seasonal changes as our counterparts in Europe or the U.S. do, we still love to embrace the moodier palette and styles for the idea of ‘Winter’.

By taking the floral print out of the traditional ‘pretty’ and ‘occasion-only’ box and putting it into one with a little more attitude, you change the idea of a floral print all together. Taking cues from the likes of Isabel Marant and wearing them with leather or over lace will instantly breathe new life into your floral print. Mango does a fab floral printed blouse that looks great over a pair of leather pants. You could also take a page from Material Girl, which offers a black skater dress with mesh panelling and a darker floral print running down the middle of the dress. Worn with a pair of a simple stilettos, this would be the ideal Friday night outfit.

If you’re a little intimidated by the dark, take inspiration from House of Holland, MSGM and Paul Smith, who spiced things up with bright and catchy shades within the large floral print. An avant-garde take on 3-D florals or an ornamental pattern of leaves with big proportions will make the blooms fresh again. TOPSHOP does a great pink and red clashing A-line dress that blends florals and the ’70s perfectly.

Here are three helpful tips to keep your florals looking fresh this Fall.

1. Clash a pretty print with a fierce heel, ripped denim or leather jacket.

2. Buy separates in the same print, so you can mix and match.

3. Finish with flats or sneakers to lessen the ‘pretty’ look and make your ensemble more casual a la Marni.
