With high concept performance outfits that come in loud colours and elaborate designs creatively paired together, they can be as outlandishly over-the-top as it can be — dare we say it — cool. So it’s no wonder that the crazy world of K-pop fashion can be an endless source of inspiration for Halloween costumes. Sifting through the Pandora box of outrageous K-pop costume concepts isn’t easy, but here are some ideas to get you started on creating a fun K-pop inspired look for Halloween!
1. Scary
When it comes to dark, supernatural themes in K-pop, no group does it better than VIXX. The 6-membered group received lots of attention for their vampire concept when promoting their song “On & On”. Get the look of the handsome vampire down pat with some spooky contact lenses, heavy eye makeup and sleek suits (scary dance moves optional).
2. Cute
There are a couple of reasons why Crayon Pop’s “Bar Bar Bar” went viral — its not just because of its addictive hook and ridiculously fun choreography, but the adorable outfits too! Probably one of the easiest looks to recreate for Halloween, all you need is a polo shirt, pleated skirt, white leggings or pants, white sneakers and a white helmet.
Another cute look that girls would love to borrow is from Orange Caramel’s “Catallena”. The group was known to perform in printed dresses (complete with matching hair accessories) that featured foods from sushi, fast food, kimchi to instant noodles. Even if others may not get the reference to this group, they will still be able to appreciate what a quirky and innovative costume you have.
3. Sexy
Arguably one of the best-selling girl groups from South Korea, Girls’ Generation has a slew of iconic costumes that are perfect for girls who want to look sexy yet cute for Halloween. From sailor outfits in “Genie”, retro cheerleaders in “Oh!”, sexy taxi drivers in “Mr Taxi” to futuristic flight attendants in “Flower Power”, flaunt your love for K-pop while still looking feminine with these getups!
4. Cool
Take a leaf out of f(x)’s book and take a spin on the traditional witch costume with one-eyed makeup and porkie pie hats! This makeup look is reminiscent of legendary sci-fi film, Clockwork Orange, and is especially eye-catching and unique, even if not for Halloween.
Even if you aren’t a fan of Korean music, you will know Big Bang for their over-the-top, colourful and show-stopping styles in their music videos. Just take their 2012 hit “Fantastic Baby” for reference, you can have your pick from G-dragon’s top-to-toe printed suit AND colourful hair extensions, any of TOP’s military outfits (complete with bubblegum blue hair), or just go in seriously graphic jackets, skinny jeans, some hip-hop bling and tons of attitude.
