How to Wear Ultra-Violet This International Women’s Day

This year, Pantone the colour authority has decided that ultraviolet is thecolour of 2018. Given its historical association with efforts to achieve gender equality, purple complements the International Women’s Day #PressforProgress campaign theme, which advocates feminism and worldwide efforts to achieve gender equality.

In the 60s and 70s, the colour was used by feminists to represent the Women’s Liberation movement as a tribute to the suffragettes.

Ultraviolet, described as “dramatically provocative and thoughtful”, has been a favourite hue of many women of power, such as Queen Elizabeth and Hilary Clinton. And now, it has made its way onto runways as well, as seen at Gucci’s spring summer 2018 collection and Balenciaga’s menswear shows.

But how exactly do you wear this regal hue without looking gaudy? Here’s how:

Add Violet Accents

The easiest way to wear purple is by accentuating your outfit with it. In other words, accessorise strategically — a cross-body purse, socks, or earrings are ways you can add a dash of ultra violet into your look.

Complementary Colour Palette

If ultra violet comes on too strong for you, consider pairing it with softer shades like lilac and lavender. They balance out each other and doubly emphasise the colour theme you’ve got going on.

Or, if you’re feeling daring, pair your ultra violet with patterned separates that include colours like pink, red, or green to make it pop even more.

Stand Out in Ultra Violet

If you’re unafraid of experimenting with colour, however loud they are, ultra violet is the perfect hue for making a bold sartorial statement.

And since the fashion world has readily hopped onto the ultra violet bandwagon, it’s only natural that this glorious hue would become part of our beauty palettes as well.

Eye shadow

Take a cue from Rihanna and Solange Knowles’s books, and accentuate your eyelids with magnificent pops of purple. An easy way to incorporate the colour is with a swipe of violet eye shadow that will have everyone enchanted by your peepers. Finish with a few coats of black mascara to make your lashes stand out.

Lipstick

If you’re feeling daring, give your good old LBD an instant upgrade on a night out in town with ultra violet lips. Remember to keep the rest of your makeup simple — purple lips make a strong enough statement!

Nails

In our opinion, there’s no easier way to rock the ultra violet trend than with a purple manicure. Low on effort but high on style, you can either go for a subtler French mani-style or play with deep violet shades to create some show-stopping nail art.
