Savannah Miller’s latest collection, Nine, is sophisticated and luxurious., incorporating warm hues and updating floral prints with a vintage twist. Having had the privilege to work with icons such as Alexander McQueen, Savannah has proven herself to be an established and successful designer. We chat with Savannah on her design process and which trends might be a hit for the next year:
Have you always known you were going to be a designer? What made you decide to become one?
I always loved making things and was knitting on pencils with strings from the age of 8. Fancy dress costume making as a child made me realise that fashion was a really magical way for me to express myself.
What/who are your sources of inspiration?
I draw a lot of inspiration from art and ancient architecture. I am also endlessly inspired by vintage fashion and am particularly obsessed with the details of pattern cutting from the 1920’s and the silhouettes and styling of the 70’s.
Describe your design philosophy.
I believe in designing clothes that will make women look and feel great. I think it is so important that our clothes don’t wear us. They are the first impression of ourselves we give to the world so they must be an honest and true reflection of that. I also think it is really important to be comfortable in your clothes so that you can get on with your day to the best of your ability without them hindering your efficiency.
What do you do when you’re stuck for ideas?
Take some time out from social media and concentrate on beautiful art books or go to a gallery. With the pace of the world going so fast it can be hard to stay truly inspired but going to places that inspires me, always lights me up. I love travelling to really far away countries to experience different cultures and get a fresh perspective on the world.
Which celebrity(s) do you wish to see wearing your designs?
I love celebrities who have their own unique sense of style. My sister, Sienna is a case in point. She always looks elegant but cool. I also love the way Alexa Chung and Chloe Sevigny dress. They have a unique individual point of view and it is really refreshing.
What do you think is the next big fashion trend? How do you think this will influence your upcoming designs?
There has been a real push towards maximalism recently with the incredible Alessandro Michelle at Gucci making decadence all the rage. I love seeing so much colour and embellishment on trend after such a long period of minimalism.
Which trends do you think are here to stay?
I think classic androgynous rock and roll fashion will never go anywhere, certainly not for me!
What is one wardrobe staple every woman/man should own?
A great leather jacket.
What is your stance on sustainable fashion?
I think it is really important that we all start to be more sustainable in all areas of our lives but it can be very expensive. So until it is more accessible to all people it is difficult for it to be a realistic thing.
What are some struggles you have as a designer?
I also have three children so my endless struggle is never having enough time. Designing is time off for me!
