Nostalgia-if one word could be used to describe this year’s Spring Summer womenswear collection, that would be it. Inspired heavily by the trends of yore, it was a historical love affair with fashion and women’s clothing, as designers transported us as far back as the 19th century with their dated, yet beautiful garments. If you have a thing or two for vintage womenswear, give this article a read.
1. 19th century glam:
It’s the 1800s again! This year’s runways saw the revival of fashion trends nearly two centuries old. Frilly collars, puffed sleeves and a whole lotta lacy florals were some elements of Victorian glam that were featured on this year’s catwalk.
2. Spanish Ruffles:
It was a love affair with Spanish silhouettes as deep red hues, dresses with flamenco-style cuts and ruffled layers were paired off with strappy black leather shoes. The black ribbon detail on each of the pieces added an extra layer of glamour to an already sensuous ensemble.
3. Hyperfeminine Silhouettes:
Resembling 18th century knickers, these delicate white numbers featured a variety of fabric-lace, silk, cotton, net. Featuring plenty of ruffles, intricately detailed motifs and see-through skirts, the sweeping fabrics and flowing silhouettes with arm length gloves invoked images of early-Prohibition era sirens.
4. The Early 21st Century:
We can never get enough of this delightfully versatile fabric, and this year’s runway proved exactly that. In a nostalgic throwback to the earlier part of the 21st century when it was acceptable to be clothed head to foot in denim, models dressed in attire consisting entirely of denim graced the runway. And not just plain ol’ denim. Distressed denim jeans, ripped jeans and heavily bejewelled denim jackets were some of the apparel flaunted on the 2016 runway.
5. The Orange Palette:
Several shades of orange: rust, tangerine, merigold, amber and cider were seen on the runway as models paraded around in hues of the orange palette. Some of the ensembles featured more than two shades of orange on the outfits. This summer, if you’re looking to wear a zesty colour which is as eye-catching as the colour red, look no further than the mighty orange.
