Leather, pleather, faux leather, leatherettes…
Have any idea which one is actual leather? If you think it has to be expensive to be true leather, then you are sorely mistaken! Real leather can come in affordable prices as well but it is important for you to know its quality and what it is best suitable for!
1) Best Quality is the Full Grain Leather
Full grain leather is of superior quality and it is possibly the most expensive as well. It is the first layer of leather that is used to make different products. Why the high cost? For its durability, of course! The fabric is tough and can withstand scratches better than any other type of leather. This is the perfect one to invest in if you are a practical person who values durability and you only shop for a new bag or jacket once every five years.
2) Second Best (But Still Pretty Good) is Top Grain Leather
Top grain leather is the second layer of grain that is used — highly concentrated with horizontal fibres. So if you have a belt that is made of it, my advice is that to not use it every day as you may end up expanding the fibres easily! Opt for a bag or a wallet where you wouldn’t risk stretching it for everyday use and perhaps keep your top grain belt for special occasions!
3) Affordable Genuine Leather
This material is probably what most of us would be familiar with. It may look like it is of the same quality as a Top Grain leather but it is actually made of the remnants after quality leather had been used up. On a budget? Then genuine leather will be your best bet! It will last you for a reasonable amount of time while looking expensive!
4) Bonded Leather for Daily Wear
Bonded leather is made out of the leather remnants after they have been processed for other products. In actual fact, it is the leather dust or scrap pieces meshed up into wearable outfits! Although it may seem like it is not of the best quality, bonded leather is the best material to make clothes as it is highly flexible due to its material. Lightweight and cheap, you would not be discounting this from your wardrobe any time soon!
5) Suede leather for the dapper night
Suede leather is made of the inner side of the leather grain that is buffed to provide you the velvet finish that many sought after. But with suede leather, it is highly absorbent towards moisture and thus it is extremely important that you do not get it wet! So stay safe and keep it for your special occasions where you need to look exceptional!
6) Nubuck leather for your travel boots
Nubuck is basically top grain leather that is buffed to give a more velvet like texture. Although it sounds rather similar to suede, it is made from the top side of the hide and not the inner bottom. Thus this will last you longer and it is perfect to wear it as your regular boots or shoes!
7) Aniline leather to show off the details
Aniline leather is by far the least processed and the most natural form of leather available. Thus the natural texture of the leather will show through even after the dying the process. So if you are one who loves the natural textures of leather, this will be your perfect match. But here is the thing, since it is natural, you should stay away from any sharp objects to avoid scratches. Personally I wouldn’t advise you to use this for travel!
8) Oiled Leather for a polished look
For those who favour a sleek look and don’t quite like the natural textures of leather, perhaps the oiled leather will be a better option for you. With a smooth finish, the natural scratch marks of the leather will not be visible. As a bonus, your leather will not get wet as easily as the others, thus letting it age slowly.
Now that you are armed with a better knowledge on leather, make an informed decision the next time you shop! Pick one that suits your budget and needs. Indulge in a Top Grain leather product as a treat to yourself. But if you want your bags to last, perhaps Bonded leather is not such a great idea.
