It’s time athleisure gets a fancy upgrade.

Glamleisure, also known as athleisure’s fancier sister, is the new trend to slip into.

Just last year, inspired by Baz Luhrmann’s Netflix flick The Get Down, Valentino’s creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli released a resort collection filled with tracksuits fit for the red carpet. In other words, sportswear as eveningwear, a glamorous twist on comfy, sporty basics.

Piccioli explained that he created his designs thinking of those who “experiment with the versatility of fashion in their everyday life, and who therefore feels the need to mix different languages and juxtapose formal and informal elements with complete freedom.”

Valentino may have ignited the spark, but other designers soon hopped on board the trend. For Spring 2018, many of them gave glam athletic pieces a shot.

Isabel Marant added a French-girl twist by teaming structured blouses with matching track pants. Peter Pilotto gave us flashy tracksuits that seem more appropriate for date night than a workout, including one that replaced track pants with a patterned skirt. Gucci, too, turned on the glamour with a bedazzled, vibrant tracksuit paired with costume jewellery, a cross-body bag, and some glitzy footwear.

Celebs have also gotten on board the glamleisure trend. Gigi Hadid, arguably one of the major proponents of the athleisure trend, added her own glam spin multiple times, proving her ability to always remain ahead of the fashion pack.

If you can’t wait to try your hand at the trend, here’s the basic gist to grasp: it’s all about pairing some cocktail hour pieces — flared pants, midi skirts, or heels — with athletic basics like sweatshirts, track pants, or sneakers.
