Trend Tutorial: Pleat Perfect

Original Content from Joyce Chua Thread SG

Pleats used to be associated with schoolgirls and pinafores. But with designers like Issey Miyake, Michael Kors, Victoria Beckham, and Proenza Schouler revisiting this old-school trend, it’s coming back as a bolder, sexier version of its past self.

Whether it’s knife pleats, accordion pleats, micro-pleats, or top-stitched pleats, there’s a look you’re bound to love.

Here’s how to get back into the fold:

  1. Leather and Shimmer

Pleats? Bad-ass? Who would have thought? But add a metallic shimmer and throw on a leather jacket, and you would have instantly upgraded your pleated skirt to cool-girl chic. Add a dash of red lipstick and leave beachy waves loose for added insouciance.

2. Go Green

There’s something about warm autumnal colours that brings a comforting quality to a pleated skirt. Shades like forest-green, ombre, heather grey, or navy-blue serve as neutrals for your accessories to stand out even more.

3. Too Cool for School

Okay, so pleats are still for schoolgirls. But as Anna Sui’s spring/summer 2017 demonstrates, you can definitely amp up your look and leap out of the goodie-two-shoes territory. Wild prints and a flirty hem make your look fun and sporty. And if you’re feeling bold, try a teased ponytail or some vampy lipstick!

4. Sweater Weather

A sweater or turtleneck top brings a cosy touch to your look, especially when juxtaposed against knife or accordion pleats. Make your outfit date night-worthy by adding a swipe of eye-popping lipstick and strappy metallic heels.

5. Get Dressy

A pleated dress is not only fail-safe (how wrong can you go with something this classic?), it’s versatile enough to transition from day to evening. Just add sneakers and a cross-body purse for day. For your evening look, go with a dress with lots of movement — let that be your statement piece so you can keep everything else minimal.
